Where Architecture and Nature Meet

There are very few hotels where I find myself reaching for my camera before I’ve even checked in.

Stepping into the soaring atrium of PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay, my attention was immediately drawn upwards as I walked toward reception after my flight from Brisbane. Sunlight streamed through the vast sky-lit roof, filtering through layers of lush greenery and sculptural timber forms, creating an ever-changing display of light, shadow and texture. It wasn’t simply impressive architecture; it felt alive, especially because the sound of songbirds created an enchanting echo.

Throughout my stay, I found myself taking a photo each time I crossed the atrium, curious to see how the space had transformed. Morning light revealed soft highlights across the foliage, while the midday to afternoon sun cast dramatic patterns that shifted across the walkways and timber structures. Even after returning from photographing around Singapore, the hotel itself continued to inspire.

As Singapore’s first Garden-in-a-Hotel, the property blends contemporary luxury with biophilic design, creating a sanctuary that feels remarkably calm despite sitting in the heart of the city. Home to more than 2,400 plants representing over 60 species beneath one of Southeast Asia’s largest skylit hotel atriums, every level feels connected to the living landscape below.

Rather than being confined to a courtyard or rooftop garden, natural elements flow through the centre of the hotel, shaping the experience from arrival through to checkout. The soaring atrium is framed by warm timber finishes, elevated walkways and cascading tropical planting, while natural light pours through the glass roof above. As the sun moves across the sky, the atmosphere continually evolves. Soft morning light gradually gives way to stronger afternoon beams that create striking shadows across the architecture, revealing new textures and patterns with every passing hour.

It’s the kind of space that rewards observation, and I can guarantee you’ll be switching from your wide-angle to zoom lens constantly!

Adding to the experience are the hotel’s resident Red-whiskered Bulbuls, whose melodic calls echo softly through the atrium. A fixture of the hotel for more than three decades, the birds are cared for each day by a local family who bring them into the hotel, adding another layer to the connection between nature and the built environment.

The simple journey between your room and breakfast feels visually engaging, and a good dose of creative inspiration is a pretty wonderful way to start each day.

Photographing the Hotel

Guest rooms, glass lifts and walkways all overlook the gardens below, while the restaurants on Level 4 open towards the lush central atrium. Every journey naturally leads through it, whether you’re heading downstairs for breakfast, returning after exploring the city, venturing out to the pool deck and club lounge or making your way back to your room in the evening.

Because you’re constantly moving through the space, the changing light becomes part of the experience. Looking down from the upper levels reveals elegant curves and layers of planting, while each ride in the glass lifts offers another perspective as they rise above the garden. For anyone with an appreciation of architecture, interior design or photography, it’s a hotel that continually reveals something new.

Room 2031: Waking Above Marina Bay

My room was a Collection Club Marina Bay Room on level 20 with views over Marina Bay towards the iconic silhouette of Marina Bay Sands. It quickly became one of my favourite parts of the stay with a balcony to sit and stare at the city scenes and beyond to the ships in Singapore Strait as I sipped my coffee in the morning.

Rather than closing the curtains each evening, I also left them open so I could wake naturally as the first light appeared across the bay. Watching the city gradually wake up became part of my morning routine, with changing colours reflected across the water as Singapore slowly came to life below. Well into the evening too, with the light shows of Marina Bay Sands visible, I didn’t even watch TV as I was glued to the show outside!

Inside, the room continued the hotel’s calming design philosophy, balancing contemporary comfort with warm natural finishes and generous windows that kept the skyline firmly connected to the experience. I’m a sucker for pale green tones and wooden features so felt completely at home in this beautiful space. One quick note, I also want to mention how lovely the housekeeping team were, even hanging my swimmers for me when I rushed out quickly one day and forgot, something I would never expect someone to do on my behalf, but felt like the sweetest thing to do.

Wellness Through Design

Natural daylight, generous open spaces and abundant greenery combine to create an environment that feels restorative from the moment you arrive, especially after a long-haul flight. I was lucky enough to experience one of the signature massages at St. Gregory Spa early in my stay, and it was the perfect way to ease into the week ahead. The Wellness Floor also features a 25-metre mineral water pool, fitness centre, spin studio and yoga space, giving guests plenty of opportunities to unwind between exploring Singapore.

Dining Among the Gardens

The hotel’s connection with nature continues into its dining experiences. Peppermint celebrates fresh seasonal produce, much of it harvested from the hotel’s rooftop Urban Farm, where more than 60 varieties of herbs, fruits, vegetables and edible flowers are grown for use throughout the restaurants, bar and selected spa experiences.

Located on Level 4 beneath the soaring atrium, breakfast became another opportunity to appreciate the hotel’s remarkable design. Looking up through the layers of tropical planting towards the skylit roof, it was easy to forget I was dining in the centre of one of Asia’s busiest cities. Nearby, Portman’s Bar embraces the same philosophy, incorporating herbs from the rooftop garden into botanical-inspired cocktails, I opted for their ‘Garden to Glass’ concept which was of course, delicious.

Exploring Singapore

The hotel’s location places many of Singapore’s most recognisable landmarks within easy reach, whether you’re aiming to photograph sunrise, or venture out for the day. A short walk leads to Marina Bay Sands across the Helix Bridge, on the other side is the Merlion statue, then of course you can’t miss Gardens by the Bay and the Cloud Forest, two of my favourite places to wander with my camera, especially in the early afternoon and into the evening. Nearby MRT stations provide convenient access to neighbourhoods including Chinatown, Tiong Bahru and Little India too.

After a day spent photographing the city, returning to the peaceful atmosphere of the hotel felt always like a welcome contrast. On my final evening, I headed to the pool for one last swim, floating above more than 1,300+ fibre-optic lights set within the tiled floor, soaking up the warm air, clear skies and twinkling water patterns that I couldn’t help but photograph and film. It was a fitting way to end my stay before heading home.

Quick note: I was a guest of Parkroyal Collection Marina Bay while I attended the ILTM Event learning about the new innovations and offerings in the luxury travel industry. As with all Visual Hotel Reviews, all opinions are my own, and I prefer to let the photos do most of the talking!
