A Guide to Photo Spots in the Lofoten Islands, Norway They’re rugged, wild and oh so beautiful. The Lofoten Islands are fast becoming one of the most popular destinations for photographers and this guide will show you all the best locations to capture the scenery from all angles. Whether you’re visiting for an adventure packed trip, hiking mountain peaks and kayaking fjords, or if you’re keen for a road trip exploring at your own pace, you’ll be wowed by all that Lofoten offers. Located in Northern Norway above the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Islands are a snow covered wonderland in winter and a sparkling lush outdoor dream in summer. Ever changing weather will keep you and your camera occupied with bright blue skies, moody clouds and striking storms that show the full force of nature’s power. Some days you’ll have calm winds creating picture perfect reflections from every angle, others fierce winds will bring giant waves that are equally as photogenic.

Hidden high in the Lillooet Range of British Columbia, Canada you’ll find vibrant turquoise streams of glacial meltwater. This natural phenomenon only happens for a few weeks each year and I have to say, photographing this landscape in is something I’ll never forget. Melting rapidly as summer creeps in, the streams produce an intense clarity and a brilliant blue hue which provides a striking contrast against the surrounding snow-covered landscape. During the winter months the glacial lake is completely frozen over with snow covering the lake lying metres below the surface. Once Spring arrives in May, the lake begins to slowly thaw out, revealing colourful meltwater streams around the edges and creating what looks like a watery race track seemingly made for adventurous kayakers. Every word in the thesaurus relating to beautiful, stunning and awe inspiring is relevant. Above the surface of the meltwater alpine peaks and pines loom amidst rocky outcrops and white slopes. Below the surface a patterned floor of ice dimples ranging from a few centimetres in width to crevices more than 8ft deep in places provides a fascinating canvas to photograph. The conditions for split-level images was perfect. I’ll be honest in saying that it’s taken...

Lanzarote – A Volcanic Beauty of the Canary Islands As far as landscapes are concerned, Lanzarote looks a little like the planet Mars blended with the Mediterranean Coast. It’s barren and rocky scenery is so shocking at first glimpse it actually takes a while for your eyes to adjust to the lack of green. Located in the Canary Islands of Spain off the coast of Morocco, Lanzarote is a rare find. The closest I’ve come to seeing a landscape similar was in Iceland but even there you’ll find green moss covering the lava fields. On Lanzarote you’ve got blue skies contrasting beautifully with volcanic craters and teal seas. White villages are scattered along the coast line and in the interior you’ll find palm groves and vineyards growing amidst black volcanic soil. For photographers there’s plenty to keep you busy so below you’ll find a guide to the most photogenic locations on Lanzarote. As always I’ll kick things off with a map highlighting where each location is, then below you’ll find a more detailed description along with tips on getting around and where to stay on Lanzarote. Playa de Papagayo Perhaps the best beach on Lanzarote, Playa de Papagayo is at...

Landscapes of Provence, France – What Time of Year to Visit Provence Awash with red, purple and yellow the landscapes of Provence are a landscape photographers dream canvas. Throughout the year various blooms come and go changing the scenery to keep us on our toes. If you’re planning a visit to Provence it’s worth checking what’s in season as sometimes, especially in the case of lavender, there’s only a short window of time that’s ideal for photographing the landscape. Take a peek below at where and when to go to capture the colourful landscapes of Provence. Poppy Fields Best time of year: mid May – mid June Best Area: Bonnieux Pretty, petite and blooming with colour the Poppy Fields of Provence are simply beautiful. Like a red blanket thrown over to blend with the lush green grass, the fields are striking and ideal for landscape photography. You’ll find the poppies coming into bloom in early May and soon after the landscapes are awash with red. For the best chance of seeing poppies hire a car and take a drive into the Luberon. The area around Bonnieux is known to bloom regularly, then there’s the Moulin de Sannes just near Ansouis...

Iceland Photo Locations: Skógafoss Waterfall Skógafoss is one of those places you instantly become fixated with. The gushing waterfall dazzles with rainbows dancing in its mist, sea birds and their white wings soaring through watery curtains and the powerful sound of the Skógar River dropping over a 60m cliff. Originally the coastline of Iceland, Skógafoss now rests about 4-5km from the ocean and its location right next to the Ring Road makes it one of, if not the most popular waterfall in Iceland. To photograph this beauty it’s best to arrive at sunrise in order to capture the landscape without busloads of tourists in your shot. Staying nearby in Skógar will enable you to visit at sunrise or even under the stars while you cross your fingers for the illusive aurora to glow above. One reason Skógafoss is my favourite waterfall is the legend of Þrasi Þórólfsson, a Viking settler who buried a chest of treasure beneath the falls in the year 900. Apparently three local men tried to retrieve the chest however when gripping a ring on the side of the chest, it snapped off and the chest was left behind. Riches still await anyone daring enough to venture...

Whitehaven Beach = The Most Photogenic Beach in Australia From the air Whitehaven Beach is like an abstract painting. It’s sandy swirls, teal water and carved channels twist and turn like Picasso’s paint brush. Okay so Picasso is one of the few artists I actually remember from art class but Whitehaven is definitely worthy of gallery walls, I know that much. Located on Whitsunday Island off the Queensland coast in Australia, Whitehaven dazzles with it’s beachy goodness. Regularly named on the world’s best beach lists, it’s not hard to see why this stretch of sand is one of the most visited in all the land. What makes Whitehaven so special is the delicate silica sand which at approximately 98% is among the purest in the world. The beach also covers 7km which means a whole lot of pure white sandy beach to stroll along. Access to Whitehaven Beach is only possible by boat, seaplane or helicopter meaning if you arrive early, you may just have it all to yourself! During the day tourist boats begin to arrive from nearby Airlie Beach and the resort islands but there’s always enough beach for everyone. In the northern section you’ll find Hill Inlet,...

Iceland is another world filled of natural inspiration and all things photo worthy. Photographing the diversity of landscapes has long been the main motivation behind my work. Water in particular has allowed me to capture the world with a unique perspective. Water of course comes in many forms, typically I photograph in warm tropical waters or the Mediterranean however on my recent trip to Iceland I was overwhelmed with the possibilities. Frozen lagoons, icebergs, waterfalls, snow and the mighty North Atlantic Ocean. Water in so many forms spread across an island nation with landscapes so varied, vast and magical… The tough little Leica X-U handled the weather conditions like a pro, built to withstand freezing temperatures above and below the water it was ideal for the rugged landscapes of Iceland. If you’re visiting Iceland, be sure to read my ‘Guide to the Best Photography Locations: South Coast” for all the best locations between Reykjavik and Hofn.

A quick guide to making sunstars with your camera! Creating sunstars is a simple and fun way to add a little flair to your landscape and travel photography. You’ve probably seen professional photographers whip out some sun sparkle and wondered how on earth they can do it when your camera just over exposes the sky making it all white when the sun is shining!? If your camera has the ability to control aperture then you’re all good to go. Even better if you’ve got a wide angle lens in your kit. If you’ve got a big wide angle lens, ideally anywhere between 14mm – 30mm, setting your camera at f/16 on a bright sunny day will create gorgeous, crisp sunstars that are super sharp and defined. Even on a little compact...
