When I started my photography project ‘The World from The Water’ two years ago, Blausee was on my list of places to capture. I had seen photos of its teal blue waters fed underground by alpine springs, of the towering Swiss Alps that hovered in the background and the little wooden cabin on its shore. It had a romantic legend that attributed to it’s beauty, a story both tragic yet beautiful. It was a landscape I had dreamt of, not a regular coastline but a lake with stunning scenery and the potential to blend elements. A few weeks ago had a week free and was in the south of France when I saw a weather forecast for heavy snow in Switzerland. The shot I had imagined was a winter wonderland, where clear alpine waters met a snow covered wilderness. This forecast was my chance. I was seven hours away by car and knew I had to get there, even just for the weekend for the chance to capture Lake Blausee in its winter coat. Confession – while I dream of visiting scenes like this and plan everything like crazy, one thing I couldn’t plan for was the road conditions. The...

Switzerland Photography Locations – Adelboden Nestled on the slopes of the Swiss Alps, Adelboden is like a real world snow globe. Roof tops are covered with inches of fresh powder, twinkling fairy lights decorate chalets and pine trees stand tall beside wooden cabins in the woods. Winter here is what I had always dreamt it should be like when growing up in Australia and ‘winter’ meant putting on a light jumper in 18degree weather. White as far as the eye can see as fields of deep snow blend with cloud covered peaks and ski slopes. Adelboden is an enchanting village with outdoor adventures available on it’s doorstep. From the centre you can take a ski lift over frozen forests up to Tschentenalp and gaze over the valley or zoom down on a toboggan. Skiers have a pick of multiple slopes such as Engstligenalp and Elsigen-metsch, all accessible with Adelboden’s incredible public transport system. Most of my photography adventures in Adelboden took place on my balcony. Okay, that sounds totally lazy and of course I did go outside but during sunrise and sunset, the light view from my balcony at Parkhotel Bellevue was something so special! My obsession with photographing cabins...

Chateau de Chillon – A Swiss Fairy tale You’ll be forgiven for thinking this is a scene from a Disney film. Snowy Swiss peaks look over a medieval fortress as white swans float by in the clear alpine lake…dream worthy right!? Well luckily for all of us, this place exists and you’ll find it in Switzerland on the shores of Lake Geneva. Chateau de Chillon is one of the most visited monuments in the country and it’s not hard to see why. While inside the castle is filled with tourists most days, the path along the lakeside is relatively people free and it’s a great place to capture shots of this historic beauty. In the 12th century, Chateau de Chillon was home to the Counts of Savoy and over the years it housed many prisoners before becoming a base and weapons depot for the French in 1798. Now it’s possible to tour the interiors and see preserved rooms, halls and courtyards along with the vaults and towers. Eerie yet fascinating if you’re into taking a peek at the past. Outside is where photographers go weak at the knees. The setting from the North looks toward the Swiss Alps, providing an...

Switzerland is known for it’s mountain scenery that echoes yodelling and cow bells from peak to toberlonesque peak. One region in particular is all this and much more. Mist bellows above the lush valley floor as waterfalls plunge over towering cliffs. Glaciers stretch to the clouds and chalet laden villages charm with their colourful flower beds and wooden veneers. Jungfrau wows anyone that enters it’s enchanting lair. For photographers you’ll be welcomed by a myriad of train and ski lift routes to reach vantage points for all those epic landscape shots. I’ve put together a guide to the best locations for capturing photos of the Jungfrau region. First up as usual is a map to all the good spots then below you’ll find sample photos from my trip alongside an explanation of what you can photograph at each location. Map: The Best Photography Locations in Jungfrau, Switzerland Kleine Scheidegg At 2,061 metres above sea level, Kleine Scheidegg is a picture perfect Swiss ski station. Offering incredible views across to the face of the Eiger mountain, this spot has scenery dripping from all angles like snow in summertime. You’ll find the train station here is the main hub where tourists jump...

There’s something romantic about being in the mountains. The crisp fresh air, sweeping views and majestic heights of rugged peaks as far as the eye can see. If you’re after a unique hotel experience, I’ve found one that’s pretty special! The beautiful Swiss Alps are home to ski villages and chalets aplenty, but on top of Mount Pilatus which overlooks Lucerne, you’ll find Hotel Pilatus Kulm. Originally opened in 1890, the hotel has been recently been refurbished and offers an experience like no other…sleeping at 2132m above sea level. During the day it’s a popular tourist attraction and you’ll find it can get quite busy. During the evening however if you’re lucky enough to be spending the night, it’s just you, the mountain air, the odd mountain goat and the stars. From 5pm until 8am Mount Pilatus is yours to explore without any selfie sticks or tour groups getting in the way. Sit outside with a giant rug and a hot chocolate while you watch the stars twinkle over the snow covered mountains, or take a hike to watch the lights of Lucerne sparkle below. Staying at Hotel Pilatus Kulm can be as romantic or adventurous as you wish....

We’ve just got back from a week-long trip to the Jungfrau Region in Switzerland and wow was it packed with adventures. I was photographing the region to create a guide for visitors that lists some of the best places to take scenic photos of the mountainous landscapes, snowy peaks and waterfalls. Being off-season I knew it would be a mix of snow and lush greenery however I never anticipated the reason it’s off-season. Avalanches. Big chuncks of snow falling from cliffs tops and soaring their way down the side of jagged rocky mountains. Dangerous yet majestic if you get to witness one from a safe distance! A lot of the ski lifts and outdoor areas were closed due to the threat of an avalanche but as we were hiking down a path in Grindelwald we heard a thunderous sound, a little like a plane engine as it passed overhead. This however was the roar of an avalanche, one that was happening right in front of us. We were completely safe on the opposite side of the valley but from the path we could sit and watch in amazement as it all unfolded. Actually we even had a picnic as it...
