Sunrise Photography in the Greek Islands – Mykonos Old Port Sunrise is a time of calm, a time I rarely see as a night owl and a time I know is worth getting up to photograph when somewhere special. Mykonos is one of those special places. With its vibrant, whitewashed buildings, colourful doors and windows and boldly painted boats bobbing in the harbour, sunrise here is not to be missed! Waking up before first light, I wandered down to the Old Port of Mykonos. Jetlag was on my side and I was almost skipping as I saw the scene before me. Water so calm the entire shoreline of the port was reflecting into the shallow sandy sea. With every intention of venturing to a spot I’d scouted the day prior, I instead stopped at the water’s edge on Paralia Choras Mikonou beach. Getting low with my Olympus E-M1 MKIII I was able to enhance the reflection and capture a series of images that still make me smile when I look back at them. Early morning pinks filled the sky and, as you’d know if you’re a regular reader of The Wandering Lens, my pastel loving self was finding it hard...

Where to photograph Sunset on Santorini When the sun dips into the Aegean Sea of Santorini you want to make sure you’re in the best spot possible to capture this iconic scene in the Greek Islands. With millions of visitors filling the cliff top paths of Santorini each year, it’s no wonder you’ve probably found this article by googling ‘Where to find the best sunset spot in Santorini?’, you may have even added ‘without crowds’. If you did, I’m totally with you. I can’t stand photographing alongside hordes of tourists and it’s the reason I wanted to write this article to steer you in the right direction! I’ve previously written a guide to the ‘Best Photography Locations on Santorini’, but this time I’m focusing on just the sunset worthy spots. Oia is the most popular location for sunset and that’s because of it’s location right on the north-western tip of the island. That said, most villages located along the rim of the caldera offer some kind of sunset views because they all face west, it’s just a matter of what time of year to visit Santorini to benefit from the direct sun falling into the sea scenario. So, without further...

Paros Island is where white washed fishing villages, rocky coastlines and olive plantations meet the sparkling Aegean Sea. I like to think of it as the chilled out little sister to the more popular neighbouring islands of Mykonos, Ios and Santorini. It’s rustic, relaxing and ideal for outdoor adventures. Fairy lights hang throughout the colourful harbour village of Naoussa on the islands northeast corner. Photogenic from every angle you’ll find hidden alleys offering Cycladic charm and coves with waterfront cafes and bars. Naoussa is also home to perhaps the cutest harbour I’ve ever photographed. Wooden fishing boats bob gently on the clear teal water as fisherman sit on brightly painted chairs and octopus hang drying in the sunshine. Like many of the Greek Islands, it’s possible to drive around Paros Island in a day, exploring every beach, village and historic sight along the way. In the mountaneous region of the island are the beautiful villages of Kostos and Leftkes. Kostos is a sleepy little village gleaming with brightly coloured fuchsia bougainvillea and a quaint town square. Leftkes was the original captial of Paros and while it’s much larger than Kostos, retains that slow pace and mountain vistas. Below you’ll find...

Stepping on board a crisp white luxury catamaran as the village of Oia sat pretty on the cliffs above and the water below glistened in the sunlight. It was always going to be a good day. On my recent visit to Santorini, I jumped at the chance to hop on board with Santorini Yachting Club for a sail and swim in the caldera. It was also the perfect opportunity to photograph the cliffs and coastline of this photogenic island from the sea! Kicking things off at the scenic port of Ammoudi Bay we sailed in the gentle breeze toward the volcano for a dip at the hot springs. The calm waters of the caldera are perfect for lounging on the deck in the ropes as the water rushes underneath. Sailing below the giant cliffs of Santorini, there’s something so intriguing about gazing at an entire village from the sea. With Fira, Imerovigli and Oia all visible, it’s easy to get lost imagining what’s happening way up there as you drift along beneath. Anchoring at Mesa Pigadia which is located just beside the infamous White Beach, we jumped off the boat for a swim in super clear water while the skipper...

Paddling through the clear azure seas as you breathe in fresh salty air and the sun shines from above; it’s about as good as a day by the water can get. The idea of sea kayaking has always fascinated me. Everyone you see paddling out in the depths of the ocean always looks so relaxed and comfortable. I had always imagined though that I’d be the one hunched over with numb arms begging to return to shore. However, there’s a little secret. It’s all in the technique, a little twist of the paddle and if you’re equipment and kayak is decked out, you’ll be cruising along like you’re driving a car….on the water of course. I jumped at the chance to try sea kayaking for the first time recently with Sea Kayak Santorini. While I’ve paddled in canoes and used the colourful rental kayaks plenty of times, I’ve never sat in a fancy sea kayak which has lots of leg room, a cushioned seat and back rest! Safely tucked into the mango coloured kayak, we set off to explore the southern coast of Santorini from the water which if you read this site regularly you’ll know is my preferred way to see...

Beneath the rocky cliffs of Oia on Santorini there’s a little gem hiding along the shores of the sparkling caldera waters. It’s a bit adventurous, completely cut-off from the crowds lurking the photogenic alleys of the streets above and is ideal for a once in a lifetime swimming experience. Santorini is known for its famous and colourful Red Beach, White Beach and Black Beach however this spot isn’t exactly a beach…it’s more a rocky cove, perfect for some fun in the sun. Cliff jump, snorkel, photograph or sun bathe…whatever your activity of choice is, you need to visit this spot if you make it to Santorini. While it doesn’t exactly have a name, just around the corner is Ammoudi Bay so let’s start there. Wander down the 235 steps from the Oia Castle to Ammoudi Port which in itself is worth a memory card of photos. The colourful port is lined with seafood restaurants and vibrant little wooden boats bob around on the aqua blue water. Follow the path to the left (when facing the sea) and wander through each restaurant until you see a track that leads around the water’s edge. As you walk along be sure to turn...
