The underwater world is like a blue watery canvas ready and waiting for your creative ideas. Of course there’s marine life and natural formations like rocks and coral to photograph but adding your own subject to a scene brings a new life to working with water, one that can push your creative boundaries and inspire a new approach to photography. Back in 2009 I introduced the concept of ‘Water and the Wedding Dress’ to my clients who were interested in jumping in the ocean the day after their wedding. It was one of the best things I did not only for my business but my creativity because it gave me a new outlet to try ideas and to challenge myself with an uncontrollable element like the sea. The idea saw me photograph brides on the Great Barrier Reef, in Thailand, the Cook Islands and the Mediterranean Sea and then led developing The World from The Water focusing on split-level landscape photographs. Standing Out – How to get your work seen as a photographer Photography as an art form and potential career has grown in leaps and bounds in recent years. With technological advances, accessibility to high quality equipment and endless platforms to showcase our work, never more so than now is photography almost everywhere we look. Saturation is a big word being thrown around these days within the industry. Is there too much saturation within the world of photography? Is social media creating a crowded market? Are we getting to the point where it’s difficult to break into the industry? The answer is yes. But, that’s okay because there’s also a huge demand for creative content and so many opportunities and entry points to begin working as a photographer if you know how to firstly, create a niche and secondly, stand out. I believe this so called saturation is in fact pushing photographers to work harder and create fresh content in order to compete which not only does themselves a favour, but the entire industry gets a boost. What is the best lens for travel photography? Read on curious one… Travel photographers typically opt for three main features when choosing a great lens to take with them on the road. Versatility, performance and portability. Having gear that’s easy to carry around and covers a variety of focal lengths means you’re able to capture an array of images from landscapes to portraits. I regularly get a lot of questions about what equipment I use and while I’ve summarised it in the ‘What’s in my Bag’ section and written before about the ‘Benefits of Travelling with a zoom lens’, this time I wanted to delve a little deeper into why, and what I photograph with. If you know what it is you want to capture, having the right lens to do so will make your job so much easier to perform. Underwater Photography: Kayaking Glacial Meltwater in Canada

Hidden high in the Lillooet Range of British Columbia, Canada you’ll find vibrant turquoise streams of glacial meltwater. This natural phenomenon only happens for a few weeks each year and I have to say, photographing this landscape in is something I’ll never forget. Melting rapidly as summer creeps in, the streams produce an intense clarity and a brilliant blue hue which provides a striking contrast against the surrounding snow-covered landscape. During the winter months the glacial lake is completely frozen over with snow covering the lake lying metres below the surface. Once Spring arrives in May, the lake begins to slowly thaw out, revealing colourful meltwater streams around the edges and creating what looks like a watery race track seemingly made for adventurous kayakers. Every word in the thesaurus relating to beautiful, stunning and awe inspiring is relevant. Above the surface of the meltwater alpine peaks and pines loom amidst rocky outcrops and white slopes. Below the surface a patterned floor of ice dimples ranging from a few centimetres in width to crevices more than 8ft deep in places provides a fascinating canvas to photograph. Weather Forecasting for Landscape Photographers

As a weather geek, photography for me is about so much more than just clicking the shutter. It’s about reading the conditions, knowing the forecast and experiencing nature in all of its glory. From snow storms to gleaming sunshine, predicting the weather forecast will allow you to prepare to a certain extent for what type of shots you can take and where to go to make the most of the conditions. I actually hesitated about writing this post as it’s letting you in on a pretty big obsession of mine and frankly, I’m not so sure people watch the sky this closely? Surely it’s not just me that gets excited by a line of clouds building in the distance? Or gets a kick out of tracking wind speeds during a storm? Yikes.
