Things to do in Dubrovnik with your Camera! Few cities conjure up the feeling of centuries past like Dubrovnik. With it’s coastal location, towering fortress, narrow alleys and old city sights, you’re spoilt for choice with things to do in Dubrovnik. Photographers will have a field day capturing the medieval architecture, street scenes and landscapes while historians and Game of Thrones fans can soak up the forts, walls and baroque buildings. When exploring Dubrovnik, I found it was a city that’s creatively inspiring from all angles. You can make a plan for the day but allow plenty of time for aimless wanderings and extended time when you find a photogenic corner that takes your fancy. It’s very easy to get lost and distracted, in a good way! I get a lot of messages from travelers docking in Dubrovnik on a cruise ship wanting to know things to do in Dubrovnik if they only have a few hours, along with others who are staying for a week or more. So, below you’ll find experiences and photogenic things to do in Dubrovnik whether you’ve got two weeks or two hours, it’ll just be a matter of prioritizing which one to do first!...

Wake up to the sound of the sea gently lapping against your cabin. As the morning progresses the sound soon turns to splashes as you jump into the clear waters of the Adriatic at lunch then to rocking waves as you cruise to your next port before sunset. This is the sailing life. It’s just as relaxing as it sounds. You also need to add warm summer days, picturesque villages and evenings spent eating delicious seafood with new friends as your yacht floats under the stars until you’re ready to tuck in for the night. It is pretty damn fine. I jumped on board a Medsailors yacht to sail the islands off the coast of Split, Croatia this September. The Dalmatian coastline had been on my photo shoot list for a while now and armed with a bucket of seasick tablets and fully loaded camera batteries, Croatia didn’t disappoint. In fact, it charmed me every little moment from sunrise to star gazing. The small port village of Stari Grad with it’s enchanting old buildings, pockets of farm land and vineyards dotted behind crumbling churches was gorgeous. Sitting at the stern of the yacht as we sailed slowly down the long...

Rising from the calm waters of the Adriatic Sea, the city walls of Dubrovnik are an evident vision of history. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the walls are considered one of the greatest fortification systems of the Middle Ages and to this day, house one of the most well preserved medieval villages in Europe. As part of my underwater photography project of Europe’s coastline, I travelled to Croatia with the idea of photographing Dubrovnik from the sea. I had seen photos and researched online about accessible entry points to the water but nothing prepared me for visiting in person and discovering how enchanting this city really is. Arriving through the old town on foot carrying my giant backpack of underwater camera gear, I found a small ladder near the port entry and under the Fortress of St John. The water was so refreshing on a 30 degree day and after checking my camera wasn’t leaking I looked up to see what I was swimming beneath. Impressive is an understatement. The walls climb out of the sea with a staggering height of up to 25m at some points, still as impenetrable as they were in the 14th century. The...

Split Photography Location – Walk through history An ancient fortress by the Mediterranean Sea once home to a Roman Emperor, Split’s Diocletian Palace is a mighty sight. As my suitcase wheels struggled over the stone streets it was quickly obvious just how worn and trodden they were. Having done little research prior to arriving in Split, I was completely surprised by the beauty and history gleaming before me. Diocletian’s Palace was built at the turn of the fourth century by Diocletian, a Roman Emperor who settled here after giving up the throne to live by the sea in what was then known as the Illyrian province of Rome. Today it’s the Croatian city of Split and inside the palace walls are 300 buildings now home to boutique apartments, stores and historic ruins to explore. There will be many more photos on the way from my adventures in Croatia but to kick things off here is a little teaser into my 24hrs in Split… Read More: Dubrovnik Photography Location Guide Sailing Croatia: Adriatic Adventures with Medsailors
