Hawaii, the simple mention of this island nation has you dreaming of the beach immediately right? Well, this surfing mecca is hard to beat in terms of the ocean lifestyle and for photographers, it’s a palette of landscapes. Below is a guide to the best photography locations in Oahu that are easily accessible with a hire car or by using public transport. On top of the locations listed it’s well worth exploring the coastal Kamehameha Hwy from Waikiki to Haleiwa…you’ll be stopping at every turn for a swim, surf and a photo shoot! Waikiki Wall and Beach It’s the glam beach hub where you’ll find the majority of tourists. You’ve no doubt seen all the photos of the palms, the surfers and the high rise holiday apartments all offering views over the breaking waves. If you’re after a Hawaiian package holiday, this is your spot. For others, it can be a little too touristy. While you’re in town though be sure to head to the Waikiki Wall. Destination: Aitutaki, Cook Islands

If you’re about to spin a globe to randomly pick your next holiday destination, you’ll want your finger to land a little north of New Zealand, south of Hawaii and just west of French Polynesia. Land here and you’ll soon be arriving on the most idyllic piece of paradise that I’ve ever laid eyes upon. The tiny island of Aitutaki is part of the Cook Islands group, an island nation sitting pretty in the expansive Pacific Ocean. Don’t go thinking this is one of those touristy package holiday destinations though. While you can certainly jump in your hotel pool and no doubt order a cocktail or two, the vibe of Aitutaki extends way beyond that of your typical tropical destination. Arriving to warm ocean breezes and the scent of fresh tropical flowers, Aitutaki didn’t have to do much to tell me it was a relaxed island paradise. From the moment I stepped off my tiny Air Rarotonga flight and onto the runway, I felt the sense of community. I’m pretty sure if my host was late collecting me (which they weren’t) that one of the neighbours would have happily let me jump on board their van or ute no questions...
