Marrakech Photography Locations Magical Marrakech is an overwhelming adventure for your senses. Flying in you’ll see the red city sitting amongst the red desert sands with the snowy capped Atlas Mountains hovering along the horizon. It’s one of the most accessible culture shocks you can experience and having visited three times now, I’m completely in awe of every single inch of this amazing city. To photograph Marrakech you need at least three days to soak up the atmosphere, explore the cultural sites and get lost in the hidden alleyways of the souks within the medina walls. Here are my tips for the best places to photograph in Marrakech: #1 Ben Youssef Medersa Nestled near the Museum of Marrakech, this is an unexpected marvel to photograph. Once home to students who learnt Islamic scripture and law, the carved wooden hallways and intricately tiled walls are now open to the public. The great courtyard a peaceful and serene place with a water feature that works wonders for reflection photographs. #2 Koutoubia Mosque Visible from near and far, the Mosque’s minaret stands at 77m tall and you’ll find it quickly becomes your compass during a stay in Marrakech. Still an active place of...

Behind the medina walls, the city of Marrakech reveals a hidden world of maze like alleyways filled with speckled light, colourful characters and endless photo opportunities. While it’s tempting to click away like a crazed tourist to capture what’s happening in every direction (because trust me, there will be something worth photographing), sometimes photographing the finer details can be a great way to tell the story of a destination. When in Marrakech this past March, I wandered the city to capture patterns, carved monuments, colours and textures that represent this incredibly diverse and mysterious city. Photographing the details of a city is a little different to wide landscape shots because you’ll need to focus and compose the image depending on the intended result you wish to achieve. If you’re hoping to showcase an intricate design that’s been hand carved into camel bone, think about which part of the design will look best on its own, will separating it from the rest of the feature enhance or diminish the effect? Will cutting the design break up the pattern or can you fit the entire object into your frame to achieve the ideal angle? A great little lens for detail shots is...

As the sun set over the red city, the magical world of the Djemma el-Fna came to life with sensory spectacles from snake charming to ancient story telling. Sitting with a mint tea on the rooftop terrace of Café de Paris I was photographing the smokey haze rising up from the sea of food stalls below that were beginning their nightly trade within the Djemma el-Fna, Marrakech’s lively square which is comparible to an open-air theatre. From the terrace the majestic Atlas Mountains were showing off their wintery white snow peaks in the distance, satellite dishes dotted the skyline as far as the eye could see and the mosques echoed their call to prayer across the city. As I zoomed in to capture a mosque with the mountains behind I noticed four palm trees in the distance perfectly aligned and standing pretty against the pink dusky sky. Despite the bustling world happening before me and the maze of the medina enticing with its evening show, these four palm trees caught my attention and seemed to sum up the mood of Marrakech…crazy yet beautifully calm.
