Dubai Hot Air Balloon – Photography Experience Aerial photography has long been one of my fascinations. Seeing the world from above; the patterns, formations and colours of nature, it’s like mother nature has creatively laid out all her goods ready to capture. While I haven’t yet been totally won over by the idea of drone photography (I love the results just not the buzzing sounds), I usually stick to traditional methods of getting high such as helicopters, seaplanes and climbing mountains…actually let’s be honest, I spent more time struggling to climb mountains than I ever did on the actual peaks. One mode of transport I’d never taken was a hot air balloon. A floating basket high above the ground with no way of steering and only the wind to guide the way…yikes. But, last week in Dubai I couldn’t resist and since it was my birthday, treated myself and my camera to a balloon flight over the desert. Romantic. I’ll be sharing a post all about camera settings and what gear is best for taking photos from a hot air balloon but for the moment, I just wanted to share a gallery of images. I don’t operate so well before...

Whitehaven Beach = The Most Photogenic Beach in Australia From the air Whitehaven Beach is like an abstract painting. It’s sandy swirls, teal water and carved channels twist and turn like Picasso’s paint brush. Okay so Picasso is one of the few artists I actually remember from art class but Whitehaven is definitely worthy of gallery walls, I know that much. Located on Whitsunday Island off the Queensland coast in Australia, Whitehaven dazzles with it’s beachy goodness. Regularly named on the world’s best beach lists, it’s not hard to see why this stretch of sand is one of the most visited in all the land. What makes Whitehaven so special is the delicate silica sand which at approximately 98% is among the purest in the world. The beach also covers 7km which means a whole lot of pure white sandy beach to stroll along. Access to Whitehaven Beach is only possible by boat, seaplane or helicopter meaning if you arrive early, you may just have it all to yourself! During the day tourist boats begin to arrive from nearby Airlie Beach and the resort islands but there’s always enough beach for everyone. In the northern section you’ll find Hill Inlet,...

Showcasing the world from above opens up a new perspective of natural patterns and colours. When it comes to coastlines and in particular beaches you’ve got glistening water, shining sand and views that you would never see from the ground just waiting to be photographed. Whether you’re climbing a mountain or flying in a helicopter it’s important to have the correct settings when working with a bright canvas like sand. On a sunny day you’ll need to be careful of your exposure compensation to ensure the sand isn’t blown out and white. This can be very hard to correct later with editing as most of the detail will be lost! When you’re taking photos from above in strong sunlight it’s best to take a few test shots to see what your camera is seeing. If the image is looking a little too much like a teeth whitening commercial, tone it down a notch by adjusting your ISO and exposure levels. Also be sure to keep an eye out for shadows within the landscape, always focus on the brightest part of the scene so your camera. I like to start with a standard bunch of settings and then work from there...
