Standing Out – How to get your work seen as a photographer Photography as an art form and potential career has grown in leaps and bounds in recent years. With technological advances, accessibility to high quality equipment and endless platforms to showcase our work, never more so than now is photography almost everywhere we look. Saturation is a big word being thrown around these days within the industry. Is there too much saturation within the world of photography? Is social media creating a crowded market? Are we getting to the point where it’s difficult to break into the industry? The answer is yes. But, that’s okay because there’s also a huge demand for creative content and so many opportunities and entry points to begin working as a photographer if you know how to firstly, create a niche and secondly, stand out. I believe this so called saturation is in fact pushing photographers to work harder and create fresh content in order to compete which not only does themselves a favour, but the entire industry gets a boost. Plus, I like to think photographers are a friendly bunch so the more the merrier, right? It’s an exciting career because it’s endlessly...

My Path to Becoming a Travel Photographer I had always been obsessed with travel but ten years ago something happened that changed my life forever. *This was written in 2017, making those ten years ago 2007. I don’t normally write personal posts on The Wandering Lens but I wanted to share a little insight into my journey to becoming a travel photojournalist. Today so many people get caught up in the world of social media, attempting to be the next big thing or go viral and I wanted to take a step back to share how my career path developed, mainly to show that not every path is the same and that it’s important to forge your own. It can be a little wobbly, take some detours or end up being all about luck and timing but having an end goal or dream usually means you’re already going somewhere. I used to record and replay TV shows like Getaway or The Great Outdoors on my VCR wanting to be the presenter who seemed to be having the time of their life somewhere exotic. Of course at the time I could barely brush my hair let alone look presentable in front...

Written in 2016 (but still relevant!) – please see the end of post for an updated link to the gear I currently use! Remember when photography meant taking 24 photos per roll of film? Crossing your fingers as you waited for the roll to be developed, hoping at least one had okay lighting and colours? Wow have times changed. While film is still around and a lot of creatives enjoy the process of developing, digital photography has advanced like a tech fueled monster. A friendly one! This post is going to be a little different to usual. I won’t be sharing any photo tips or destination guides. This time the story is a bit more personal. It’s all about how just over ten years ago I barely knew what ISO is, let alone how to creatively compose a photo (see examples at the end of the article). Over the years my photographic eye has developed alongside my gear and to show how here’s a little bit of an insight into my career and cameras…starting way down low at 4 megapixels of grainy goodness. My travel photography journey started out with a 4megapixel Sony Cybershot that I took with me at 19...
