Iceland Photography Location Guide – Reykjavik to Hofn It’s a country where waterfalls, icebergs and volcanoes converge to create otherworldly landscapes. Iceland will take your breath away with natural beauty from the moment you arrive to the moment you fly over its dramatic coastline on your way home. It’s no wonder Iceland photography locations are high on any photographer’s wish list! Before we get started while this guide is titled from Reykjavik to Hofn, it actually includes a section a little further east to Djúpavogshreppur…that fabulous name is just a little too long for the heading! Exploring Iceland photography locations by car is the best way to see as much as possible and the southern coast is full of places to visit. You can snorkel between continents before driving east to experience endless waterfalls and glaciers, it’s the ideal destination for adventure travellers. The Ring Road from Reykjavik to Hofn is filled with photo stops, if you drove straight it would take about 6hrs to cover the odd 545kms however with so many places to see along the way, it’s possible to take 2-3 days…or much longer if you add on activities and hikes and want to take it slow!...

Learn and Improve Your Photography at Home! One common misconception in photography is that you need to be somewhere to get a good photo. Somewhere outside, somewhere with stunning landscapes and somewhere far from home. Sure, visiting amazing destinations help to easily create some visual magic but when it comes down to it, having a great ‘eye’ for photography is just as important as your subject matter. You’ve got all you need to improve your photography right in your own home and I guess now is as good a time as any to get cracking and take advantage of the chance to get creative within your own four walls! Isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic is the ideal time to improve your photography by simply being a critic of your own work and taking the time to improve your photography by learning creative techniques or developing ideas and photo shoot concepts. You can get started by something as small as reviewing old images, opening up Photoshop and clicking on random tools to see how they work or take it a step further and develop mini photo shoot concepts on your kitchen bench. I’ve been using this time to edit new projects...

How to Edit in Photoshop Photoshop Tricks – How to Remove Unwanted Subjects, Clone + Replicate Photoshop is magic. That’s basically my conclusion on the matter. I don’t really know how it works from an IT or programming perspective but I do know how to use its tools and that it works wonders when you’re editing photographs. A lot of Photoshop skills can be learnt by trial and error. A quick Google search will tell you what tools are for what purpose, or even just hovering your mouse over each icon will reveal its intended use or name. Before reading any further, if you don’t yet have Adobe Photoshop, you can sign up for a 7 day free trial here so you can test it out and see if it works for you. Sometimes on location there’s an incredible shot just waiting to be taken but there’s a rubbish bin in the middle of it, or one person that just won’t move out of the way despite your less than subtle hints. Rather than wait for someone to move or physically ripping the bin out of the ground, you can simply take the shot and then remove them later. Much...

Travel Photography Tips – Improve Your Travel Photography! Travel photography is about so much more than following a step by step guide and visiting popular destinations. It’s about stepping off the beaten path in search of something unique. Even if the location you’re photographing is just down the road from your house, being prepared or at least having an idea of what you want to capture can go a long way in achieving beautiful results. Instagram has told us where the hot spots are and how you should pose when you get there but forget all that noise and dream up where you want to go, how you want to capture it and create your own perspective of somewhere interesting. Knowing the best camera settings is one thing but personally, I find a huge part of photography is how you see the world and having the motivation to get outside and start shooting. Once you’ve got plans to travel somewhere new there are a number of things to do that will improve your travel photography, some are possible before you even arrive. Travel Photography Tips #1 Scout for Locations Before arriving at a destination do some research to scout the...

Once the snow melts and summer arrives the landscapes and alpine scenery around Briançon flourish. If you’re planning a visit to France this year, save a little time in your itinerary for a visit to the French Alps. You don’t have to wait for the winter and if you’re as “great” at skiing as I am, summer is probably a better choice anyway! The region around Briançon is mountainous and filled with photography opportunities if you’re keen to jump on a ski lift and go for a hike. The town itself is the highest in France at an altitude of 1,326m and has medieval castles perched on surrounding peaks. Take a peek at some of the best spots to visit for capturing landscape photos of the alps in the warmer months Below is a map you can open in Google Maps to plan your own journey… Col de la Pisse – Serre Chevalier Take the ski lift from Serre Chevalier station to the highest point and you’ll have your camera out within 60 seconds. The views from the station hut are jaw dropping but…a hike even further will ensure you’re amongst it to witness even more alpine landscapes. A 1-2hr hike...

Want to create photographs that make your friends want to jump in the image and be there with you? When visiting a new destination there is always a check list of major attractions, monuments and sights to visit and taking a photo to say you’ve been there is all part of the fun. Sure taking a quick snap on your phone can be a great way of quickly sharing the moment with everyone back home but what about creating an image that makes people want to step right into the photo and enjoy the view with you? Places like the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and Times Square have all been photographed probably a billion times over and it’s probably safe to assume that more than 80% of these images are very similar in appearance. When composing a photograph of anything whether it be travel, people or landscapes you can make it a little more interesting for those viewing and for yourself by thinking outside the box and looking for alternate angles to light up the scene in front of you. Let’s take the Eiffel Tower in Paris as an example. It’s one of the most recognisable monuments in the world...

Dubai Hot Air Balloon – Photography Experience Aerial photography has long been one of my fascinations. Seeing the world from above; the patterns, formations and colours of nature, it’s like mother nature has creatively laid out all her goods ready to capture. While I haven’t yet been totally won over by the idea of drone photography (I love the results just not the buzzing sounds), I usually stick to traditional methods of getting high such as helicopters, seaplanes and climbing mountains…actually let’s be honest, I spent more time struggling to climb mountains than I ever did on the actual peaks. One mode of transport I’d never taken was a hot air balloon. A floating basket high above the ground with no way of steering and only the wind to guide the way…yikes. But, last week in Dubai I couldn’t resist and since it was my birthday, treated myself and my camera to a balloon flight over the desert. Romantic. I’ll be sharing a post all about camera settings and what gear is best for taking photos from a hot air balloon but for the moment, I just wanted to share a gallery of images. I don’t operate so well before...

Where are the best Places to Photograph Sunset? As the day comes to and end and the sky erupts into a palette of pinks, oranges and reds you want to be in the right spot at the right time to capture the perfect sunset that completes your travel album. While not every sunset is going to be a photographers dream, the golden hour is beautiful regardless and I’ve put together this list of my top ten favourite locations to photograph the setting sun around the world… From Iceland to Australia, this list is a collection of images I’ve personally taken in these locations, I know there are many, many more places that could be included. If you’ve got recommendation for sunset photo locations, please share your spot in the comments below, you’re more than welcome to link to your photos too! #10 Marrakech, Morocco Dusty desert sands and red ochre buildings make Marrakech an easy inclusion for this list. Combining the colours of the city with the sky at sunset blends together the perfect portrayal of magical Morocco. You’ll find most riads (traditional hotels) have private rooftop terraces from where you can photograph sunset over the city or if you’re...
