Queenstown Photography Locations, New Zealand Be prepared to have your breath taken away by mountain scenery that’s simply inspiring from all angles. Flying into Queenstown is an experience in itself, but the winding roads that venture through sheep-filled paddocks, past river rapids and underneath snow-capped peaks are a photographer’s wonderland. This guide to Queenstown’s best photography locations is based on my experience from three visits in varying seasons. Just as the snow began to gently fall over the autumn coloured forests and harsh rocky mountain tops, twice in the middle of winter. Here are my picks for the best photography locations in and around Queenstown, New Zealand. I could easily list another 50, but if you’re visiting for a few short days or spending some time skiing on the slopes, then these 18 locations will ensure you have a great range of landscape photographs to showcase the magic of real middle earth. As always, let’s begin with a map so you know where you’re heading… Map: The Best Photography Locations in Queenstown #1 Wilson Bay To kick things off I’m listing my favourite spot first, Wilson Bay. A scenic cove nestled on the banks of Lake Wakatipu, it’s an easy pit...

Aerial Photography Tips, Camera Settings + Gear Advice Capturing an alternate perspective of a scene is always exciting, perhaps never more so than when taking aerial photos. With the world beneath and a never ending canvas of potential shots waiting, aerial photography is a thrilling way to take landscape photos. You can be in a helicopter, seaplane, small plane, hot air balloon…the list goes on, whatever your aircraft of choice is, more often than not, the process of taking a great aerial image is the same. In this months ‘Setting the Scene’, I want to share a little about how I capture aerial photographs and list some of the best lenses, settings and creative tips to use for your next aerial attempt. If you’ve never photographed aerials before it can be a little intimidating at first because you’ve got limited time in the sky, it’s usually a bit of a splurge and with the movement and distance, can be tricky to know what to set your camera at to get optimal results. But fear not, once you land you’ll be wanting to do it over and over again! Aerial Photography – When is the best time? Now obviously this depends...

When you think about photos of Greenland, the first images that come to your mind are probably the immense icecap that covers about 80% of the country or the huge icebergs floating in the ocean. Add to this countless sled dogs, high snow-capped mountains, brightly coloured houses, beautiful northern lights (aka aurora borealis), and a rich Inuit culture. It’s truly one of the most extraordinary places on earth. This guide was written by Arctic + Aurora Photographer Rayann Elzein When planning a trip to Greenland, I decided to stay three entire weeks which gave me plenty of time to experience and photograph all the beauty of 3 Greenland photography locations, all of which were located in West Greenland: Ilulissat, Disko Island and Uummannaq. Having a lot of time in each location allowed me to really immerse myself in the landscapes and features that each place has to offer. With this guide on The Wandering Lens I want to share my tips on the best Greenland photography locations, the best places to see the northern lights, and the best hiking trails to follow. Greenland Photography Locations… #1 Ilulissat [hygge_icon icon=”flag”] 69.2167° N, -51.1° E The entrance point to West Greenland is without...

Travel Photography Tips – Improve Your Travel Photography! Travel photography is about so much more than following a step by step guide and visiting popular destinations. It’s about stepping off the beaten path in search of something unique. Even if the location you’re photographing is just down the road from your house, being prepared or at least having an idea of what you want to capture can go a long way in achieving beautiful results. Instagram has told us where the hot spots are and how you should pose when you get there but forget all that noise and dream up where you want to go, how you want to capture it and create your own perspective of somewhere interesting. Knowing the best camera settings is one thing but personally, I find a huge part of photography is how you see the world and having the motivation to get outside and start shooting. Once you’ve got plans to travel somewhere new there are a number of things to do that will improve your travel photography, some are possible before you even arrive. Travel Photography Tips #1 Scout for Locations Before arriving at a destination do some research to scout the...

As a weather geek, photography for me is about so much more than just clicking the shutter. It’s about reading the conditions, knowing the forecast and experiencing nature in all of its glory. From snow storms to gleaming sunshine, predicting the weather forecast will allow you to prepare to a certain extent for what type of shots you can take and where to go to make the most of the conditions. I actually hesitated about writing this post as it’s letting you in on a pretty big obsession of mine and frankly, I’m not so sure people watch the sky this closely? Surely it’s not just me that gets excited by a line of clouds building in the distance? Or gets a kick out of tracking wind speeds during a storm? Yikes. I hope there’s at least someone else still reading to this point! If you’ve got this far, hooray! Let’s talk all things weather and photography. Clouds might ruin the day if you plan on lying by the pool but if you’re out to capture long exposures at sunset, they’ll be on the top of your wish list. The information below is especially relevant if you’re looking to capture...

The Lofoten Islands and their mighty mountain ridges rise from the Arctic Sea forming one of the most impressive landscapes on earth. For photographers, Lofoten is becoming quite the bucket list destination and it’s really not hard to see why. Every fjord offers an alternate perspective of epic cliffs reflecting in the chilly yet clear water below. The contrasting colours of aquatic hues blending with the striking shades of rock and snow create a canvas that’s hard to ignore. With the weather conditions changing every few minutes, the Lofoten Islands are an ever-changing subject. One minute you’ll have blue skies and sunshine glowing across the ice covered beaches, the next a storm will roll in producing moody skies and dramatic scenes. I’ll be sharing a guide to some of the best photography locations shortly along with a visual review of the best place to base yourself on a trip to the region. For now though, I just wanted to share the landscapes of Lofoten in all their snowy, moody and rugged goodness. A collection of images without the cute cabins, the fishing villages or the roads leading into the distance, just landscapes of Norway’s photogenic coastline. All images photographed with...

Landscape photography doesn’t need to be complicated or just left to the professionals. Capturing a scene is all about composition and knowing how to use your camera to produce what your mind envisions. Whether it’s a beautiful beach, rocky mountain range or lush jungle, you can photograph landscapes with the help of a wide angle lens, allowing as much of the environment into the image as possible. Below is a guide to the best lenses and tips on how to compose a landscape photograph… Lens Guide When purchasing an SLR camera you will have the choice of a few starter lenses and can then invest in additional lenses depending on your photography intentions and expertise. For landscape photography nothing really beats a wide angle lens. A wide angle lens is generally considered to be around 14-24mm however there are a number of superb quality ultra wide angle lenses that are changing the game. My secret weapon of choice for all landscape shots is a 7-14mm M.Zuiko f/2.8 PRO Lens (14-24mm equivalent), I also use this for my underwater landscape shots. Because it has the wide angle zoom it allows me to create ultra wide landscape images and capture an entire...
